Star Trek

Went to see Star Trek today and I was ready to write a scathing post about it too.  I was prepared to talk about how modern Hollywood once again took at geek adored story and mainstreamed it to the point of irrecognition.  Damn them, they actually wrote an enjoyable story, that artfully built upon the Star Trek myth instead of ignoring it.  So now I can’t go on my rant.

The movie starts off with James T. Kirk dad’s taking over command of a doomed star ship in the hopes of saving his crew.  Fast forward a couple years, and you see young Kirk stealing a car and running away from a cop.  You are suppose to then think to your self, “wow what a rambunctious little boy.”  Fast forward a couple more years and you see Kirk, in his late teens, fighting in a futuristic bar.  Now you are suppose to think,  “wow what a disregard for bar furniture, he is such a rebel.”  I mock but beyond young Spock that’s about as much character building as you are going to see.  To be quite frank that was as much as I could handle.

The movie fed you information in a quick but digestible rate. The story progressed and kept you in the dark just long enough to get you interested. and reviled all of its secrets right before you got frustrated.  This tactic of story telling works for me at least.

This movie is a definite watch, and one of the only action movies I can think of that the hero doesn’t get the girl.  It gets my stamp of approval  umm don’t know what that is worth though.
